Communication

Aims

At Castle School we endeavour to provide a total communication environment which facilitates the self-help, resilience and independence skills of the students in our care.  We aim to promote consolidation and generalisation of skills through providing a variety of structured and unstructured opportunities for communication every day.

Our biggest aim is to ensure our students are able to communicate their wants, express their needs, socialise to their full potential, and to be part of a community where their voice is heard.

Curriculum

Communication is embedded throughout the day from the moment students walk in the door. Each class teacher will design a bespoke communication offer for their class depending on student need: interventions and approaches will be varied, but we have listed a series of possible interventions and approaches on the right. Communication activities will be themed and adapted following the sequence of story and topic themes for each learner strand.

Assessment

Each student has a bespoke EHCP target in communication, which is usually taken or adapted from the SCERTS framework, and co-produced with the student, their family, and relevant professionals if appropriate. Pre-formal students may also be assessed against the Castle flower frameworks and Routes for Learning.
