Castle School

Dover Class

Meet the Team

Introduction

In Dover class we are a group of semi-formal learners from year 7-9. We are all learning to communicate. You might hear us talk, see us use Makaton signing, PECS, or using our communication boards. We base our activities around a story, this helps us to develop our skills in Maths and English as well as our social and communication skills and independence.

You might see us listening in the circle, working on independent tasks at our tables, moving around to communicate, or self-regulating in our outside areas.

Supporting Our Students to Learn

We are following the Castle rainbow levels in Maths and English. We are working on developing our early Maths and English skills, as well as our social and communication skills and independence.

You might see us listening in the circle, working on independent tasks at our tables, moving around to communicate, or self-regulating in our outside area.

We are using a therapeutic approach for our learning as the focus is on each pupil’s individual needs. Our sessions focus on pupils' social skills, turn taking, group work and communication. The aim is to provide pupils with the ability to recognise their own emotions, create and sustain friendships. During the day we have many opportunities to develop and manage self-regulation.

We start each day by offering a physical and sensory circuit around the playground. Throughout the week we have many sessions to develop our fine and gross motor skills, this ranges from Tac-Pac, Dough Disco and Lego Therapy to swimming, bikes, rebound therapy and PE lessons. This ensures that pupils have a greater opportunity for independence.

We are all learning to communicate. You might hear us talk, or see us use Makaton signing, PECS, or communication boards. Opportunity for communication begin as soon as the pupils arrive. We have sessions that focus on communication and interactions such as Attention Autism ‘bucket’, circle time, identiplay, social time and having time in the intervention rooms. This ensures pupils are working on their communication and interaction targets.
